Font License

Hello! You’ve found yourself on this page either because you’ve downloaded one of our fonts (thank-you!) or you’re checking how you can use it before you download it (thank-you shall be deployed upon download). This page should cover all common queries – give us a throaty shout using our contact form if your question isn’t answered, and we’ll reply to you as quickly as we can. Also, be sure to check out our general terms of use for Chequered Ink products. If you’re confused at all by the wall of text below, try our simple font license quiz instead.

I only want to use the font for personal reasons (not publishing, even for free, anything using this font)
You may use it for free! (You can totally still donate, we’re doing this full-time so if you have even a couple of dollars sitting around collecting dust, it’s lunch for us! But don’t feel obliged to)

I want to make something that I can distribute non-commercially only with this font
Please consider a donation. See below. But if you cannot donate, then go ahead and use it anyway!

I want to use the font in something I can sell
Please donate! A minimum donation of $1 is required to use our fonts commercially (although we’d recommend and be grateful for a higher amount). The donation will allow you immediate rights to use the font (with the receipt PayPal provides being your receipt and proof of purchase), but if you require an invoice or something more formal, get in touch with us via the contact page.

I want to use the font for non-profit purposes
You may use it for free! Note that non-profit specifically applies to businesses that operate not-for-profit. This includes charities, religious foundations, and anything operated predominantly by volunteers – it doesn’t include people that just aren’t making money from their usage.

I’ve donated, what happens now?
You use the font and we amicably part ways, with our sincerest gratitude to you! You do not need our written permission to begin using the font, the receipt you receive through PayPal or whichever other form of payment you choose is sufficient proof that you’ve donated and now have the rights to use the font commercially.

I need commercial rights for more than one person, or a person other than myself. Do we all need to donate individually?
Nope! If you’re all using it for a common goal, then a single donation does us perfectly. Check below for suggested donation amounts for larger teams, because, y’know, a big team means you must totally be rolling in spare dosh, right?

Why use Patreon when I can just donate once-off?
We have Patreon as an alternative to once-off donation set up for those of you that wish to support us long-term, or wish to receive the incentives as listed on Patreon, or both. If you’re looking to acquire commercial rights to one of our fonts once and never talk to us again, that’s absolutely fine – don’t back us on it!

I want to distribute the font as-is, either unmodified or modified
If you’re a font repository looking to add our fonts to your site, please include a link to both our website and our PayPal Donation page, the unedited .zip file containing both the font file and the license information, and of course credit to Chequered Ink. Otherwise, please contact us via the contact page. We’re happy to hear you out, and generally will be fine with redistribution in formats such as design compilations, font compilations, etc.

I require an EULA, an invoice, a signed document verifying our right to use a font commercially, or other formal requests
Please contact us using the contact form here. We can supply invoices on request and are happy to sign documents to confirm your right to use our fonts commercially and non-exclusively. We do not have an EULA set up by default, but for a very special donator we’d be happy to write one up.

So what are my rights with the font I download, if I donate, summarised?
If you donate (or are a non-profit): you may use the applicable font or fonts, non-exclusively, in any or all of your, your team’s, or your agency’s commercial and non-commercial ventures. You may alter the font for your own use but must not redistribute the altered version, or the original version unless it includes the original, unedited license.txt. You may also convert the font into different formats for compatibility with different systems, including converting them into web-friendly formats such as WOFF.

I desire, or require, the rights to use one of your fonts exclusively
You can certainly make us an offer to gain exclusive rights to use one! This will be expensive, much more than non-exclusivity, and will be a set price. The price will be partially determined by how much the font generates us in ad revenue and donations. It will also not be true exclusivity – anyone that has already donated will still be able to use the fonts, and while we can have them pulled from DaFont and FontSpace, any other websites that host them have harvested them and we have no control over them. But email us here if you’re serious about buying exclusivity, we’re happy to enter discussions.

How to Donate

If you want a guideline on how much to donate (and this isn’t written rule – being a donation, make it what you want!), here is one. Cue the sad violin: please bear in mind when donating that we’re two friendly people doing this kind of work full-time, and we need to eat, sleep, and survive, so if it doesn’t affect you negatively to throw us a couple of extra notes, we’d love you forever for it! But conversely, we also know that some of you are probably in a worse situation than us, so donate a little less than the guideline if that’s all you can afford.

  • A project from one or a few individuals that won’t make a significant amount of money – $10-20
  • A project from one or a few individuals that will make them some disposable income – $15-30
  • A project from one or a few individuals that will make them some livable income – $30-50
  • A small-scale project or a minor usage from a business – $50-100
  • A project from a business where the font is used or seen infrequently – $100-200
  • A project from a business where the font is used or seen frequently – $250-1000
  • You’re a design studio that is looking to beef your font collection up without an immediate use for the one you’re donating for – we sell packs of fonts!
  • The font is going to be quite prominent in a small to medium size company or brand – $250-1000
  • The font is going to be the face of a small to medium size company or brand – $250-2500
  • The font is going to be quite prominent in any entity that makes around $1,000,000 – $1000-5000
  • The font is going to be quite prominent in any entity that makes significantly more than $1,000,000, or is being made by a person or company worth a heck of a lot of money, or is going to be the face of a large company or brand – it’s up to you, but we won’t object to the donation being made in the form of a money shower
