Gyro Boss Turns 10
Our cheeky little alien mascot has been locking his victims in his orbit for a decade now – join us on a short tour of Gyro Boss history and find out what’s next for our favourite villain and his wacky weaponry.
The Original Gyro Boss
The classic Gyro Boss launched on Android, iPhone and Windows Phone on this day back in 2016. Since then, over 200,000 players have tried to best the beast in this straight-forward score-chasing avoid ’em up.
The attacks in this version were rock hard to dodge – which contributed to its huge popularity back in the day!
Originally the game was all black and white, but with the 1.1 update we gave Gyro Boss his characteristic red accent which has remained with him in all of his appearances since.
Gyro Boss DX
Three years later Gyro Boss blasted his way onto Steam and Nintendo Switch in Gyro Boss DX.
This new game built on the formula by adding more weapons and game modes, objectives, and even a multiplayer party mode!
We really wanted to take the series in a more fun direction, where we could picture friends hanging out and enjoying Gyro’s silly weapons together.
Cameo Appearances

As well as appearing in his own games, Gyro has shown up in a couple of our other titles.
Super Jam Land Kart Racing is a kart game we made exclusive to the GameDevDan vs Life pack. Gyro Boss appears as one of the 12 drivers players can choose from in the game.
Last year, for the tenth anniversary of Chequered Ink, we released the free card game Decadence. Gyro and his wacky weapons feature on several of the cards and you can even play a match against the alien menace himself!
More Gyro Boss?

We’ve been wanting to extend the Gyro Boss series for a long time, leaning into the fun multiplayer vibe from Gyro Boss DX.
There are a lot of designs floating around here at Chequered Ink HQ for the next game, and we haven’t quite nailed down the details yet, but you won’t have to wait long to find out more.
Here are some things we know for sure:
- The next game will have a whole cast of cute-but-deadly characters to join Gyro Boss on his adventures.
- There will be fully fleshed-out single player and multiplayer modes like Gyro Boss DX but bigger and better.
- The game will be cross-platform, bringing together Gyro’s roots on mobile and evolution to PC and consoles.
Stay tuned, this could (and really should) be the year that Gyro Boss finally flies onto our screens again.
