Making a Game in Five Days – Part 4

Making a game in five days part 4

We’re coming up fast to the end of the GMC Jam now with just 19 hours left until the deadline. My entry is fully playable, but I’m trying to cram in more content in the time I have left! Read on to find out what’s new since yesterday.

New Map Features

I added two new items to the game, a pencil and an eraser. Players can use the pencil to draw on the floor anywhere in the world, making notes about objects they want to see later.

When players open the map screen, they can see their drawings there too! This makes it easy to take note of suspicious looking objects on the map and find them again when you need them.

The eraser item gets rid of the drawing, in case you make any mistakes. All drawings are saved to the game’s save file so they’ll still be there if you close the game and come back later!

Music and Sound Effects

Before I got too ahead of myself adding lots of new graphics and items, I decided to make sure that everything in the game so far had a relevant sound effect.

I also added some music tracks for the title screen and the game world, both from Moonana’s 80 Songs Pack.

The game now feels far more alive than before. After adding the audio I created a build of the game and uploaded it to the GMC Jam topic. It’s not fully finished yet – but I wanted a link to the game in the topic just in case I don’t get time to add more content! It’s always nice to submit something to the jam even if you haven’t quite finished.

Fishing

Any open world adventure game worth its salt has a fishing mechanic! One of the items I’ve added today is a fishing rod. But you can only catch one fish at a time. As you might expect, that fish can be used to interact with another object in the game.

The game now has 20 different objects you can pick up, put down, use and interact with. It probably won’t get too many more than that in the time I have left, but I’m trying my hardest to make the game as fun as possible!

See you tomorrow for the last entry in this series.

Daniel

I make funky little games of all different kinds like Gyro Boss, Plunder Dungeons & Spellworm! Also making lots of fonts & free game assets.
