Nine new fonts and better license terms

We’ve just updated our All Fonts Pack with 9 brand new fonts bringing the total files in the pack up to 1,257!

The new fonts cover a variety of different styles, they are:

• Conflict 3040 – a cyberpunk military font
• Chopera – a futuristic techno font
• PR Confidential – a spy-themed, chunky font
• Wheel Turn – a sharp, techno font
• Futuralistic – a thin, futuristic font
• Excess V – a chunky, futuristic font
• Psychlone – an alien-looking sci-fi font
• Vengeance at Sea – a vintage, piratey font
• Bring Me A Helicopter! – a ransom note-style font

These fonts are available to both new and existing customers. You can either download the whole pack again to get the update, or download the fonts individually from our fontspace profile via the links above.

New, Better License Terms

The All Fonts Pack was first released 18 months ago and in that time many of you have asked for various clarifications and improvements to the license terms. Today we can announce a few changes:

Device Installs

Section 3A initially stated you could install fonts on 5 devices, it was then updated to 20 devices but recent versions of the pack accidentally shipped with the old wording. We have corrected this and it now says you can install on 20 devices again.

Protecting Font Files

Section 3Ci used to say that you could use the font in digital documents / software provided that: The Product is protected from extraction by the end user so that they may not access the Product on its own outside of your application.

This worried a lot of people who thought that they may get in trouble for shipping the font as part of a game or website, since tech-savvy users could probably extract our fonts if they wanted to. We’ve now updated Section 3Ci so that it says:

[Provided That] You take reasonable steps to prevent or discourage the end user from accessing and using the Product on its own outside of your documents and applications. For example, if the Product file is bundled with your games, software or website you could add a notice that the Product should not be used without permission from Chequered Ink Ltd.

This allows us to continue to protect our own fonts from people who would buy them simply to redistribute them, while also giving you the confidence and clarity to ship them with your games and use them on websites.

Allowing End Users To Input Text

Section 3Cii used to say you could use our fonts provided that: Your digital document or application is not designed to serve the same function as the Product, i.e. the document must not allow end-users to use glyphs from the Product for use in their own designs.

We have now added the word “commercial” before “use in their own designs”. This clears up some circumstances where players may be using the fonts to create text inside your game, e.g. to design their own clothes or textures for their character. They can now do that as long as they’re not selling it.

Use On Websites

In section 3D, we’ve added the word “websites” to the list of example uses. While we felt the old terms technically allowed web use, we regularly had customers asking us for clarification because we didn’t specifically mention it in our terms. Now it’s there, confirmed, you can use these fonts on your websites!

We hope that these new license terms will help bring you the confidence to use the fonts in more of your designs, because we absolutely love stumbling across them! We’ll be rolling out these changes to our other font licenses soon too.
