RPG Elements & Their Synonyms
Elemental types in RPGs come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you’re looking for the classic staples, or ideas for something new, we’ve compiled a big list of RPG elements and their synonyms to help inspire you!
Fire ๐ฅ
Born from flames, creatures with this type are often scary, fire-breathing reptiles. They cause havoc for plants, but run whimpering at the sight of water.
Fire, Flame, Pyro, Lava, Magma, Smoke, Ash, Explosive, Heat.
Water ๐ง
Pure, clean, fresh water. Wielded in the wrong hands it becomes a deadly tool for defeating fiery or earthy beasts.
Water, Aquatic, Aqua, Bubble, Sea, Hydro, Mist / Fog, Wave.
Fish, Amphibian.
Bio ๐ฟ
A broad category across the genre, Bio can include plants, gooey poisonous substances and even bugs. Creatures and attacks of this element will often be weak but inflict additional status effects.
Bio, Grass, Plant, Wood, Bulb, Seed, Nature, Flower, Flora, Forest, Jungle, Vegetable, Fruit.
Poison, Toxic, Slime, Goo Chemical, Alchemy.
Bug, Insect, Hive.
Earth ๐ชจ
The sturdiest natural element in the list. Monsters with Earth typing will often have high defensive stats and low speed. They’re usually weak to water and plants, but immune to electrical attacks.
Earth, Ground, Rock, Stone, Sand, Dust, Soil, Mud, Mineral, Crystal, Geo, Land, Mountain, Material.
Lightning โก
Often fast and hard-hitting, but with low defences, Lightning monsters are generally glass cannons. Electrical magic usually results in victims being stunned, or dropping their items.
Lightning, Electric, Thunder, Static, Volt, Bolt, Spark, Energy, Power, Plasma, Storm, Tempest.
Ice ๐ง
Ice type spells are sometimes good against fire, because they cool it down, but other times they are melted by it. They can usually cause some kind of freezing or weakening of the enemy’s stats.
Ice, Snow, Tundra, Frost, Glacial, Cold.
Wind ๐ช๏ธ
Wind-types tend to take the form of birds and other flying creatures – which we’ve listed as a separate type below. They can also be insects and mythical creatures like angels. Sometimes this type will replace the “Light” type.
Wind, Air, Aero, Sky, Cloud.
Darkness ๐
Sometimes split into several types, the element of Darkness is usually powerful and mysterious. Dark attacks often inflict status effects like sleep, blindness and even instant death. Monsters often include spirits, ghosts and other supernatural creatures.
Darkness, Shade, Shadow, Evil, Wicked, Chaos, Nightmare, Illusion, Death.
Ghost, Spirit, Spectral, Spooky, Undead, Demon, Fiend, Zombie, Devil, Skeleton, Bone, Grave.
Light โจ
The counterpart of Dark-types, mostly viewed as a positive force in the game world. Light magic can deal damage, but also revolves around healing, resurrection and purity. Some games name this type after specific magical creatures like fairies or angels.
Light, Holy, Divine, Virtue, Sun, Solar, Glitter.
Magic, Arcane, Fairy, Spellcaster, Angel.
Heal, Cure, Restore / Restoration, Life, Love.
Combat ๐
Combat or Fighting types are usually more powerful than mere “Non-Elementals”. Their tough fists can smash through hard materials like rocks, ice and metal. Some combat types like arrows and other projectiles deal more damage to flying targets.
Combat, Physical, Fighting, Force, Body, Arena, Wrestling, Martial Arts, Humanoid, Warrior.
Shoot, Throw, Projectile, Arrow, Anti-Avian.
Mind ๐๏ธ
Mind elementals will have attacks that focus on psychic powers. They’re strong against enemies who rely on close combat (Mind over matter, brains over brawn) and they set up clever strategies. Psychic powers often allow the user to boost their own stats or inflict status effects.
Mind, Psychic, Psyche, Realm, Dream, Hypnosis, Sleep, Trance.
Metals & Technology ๐ค
Metal monsters are often immune to many other elemental attacks. Their hard, shiny shells can reflect magic. They might be weak to electricity as they are strong conductors, or in other games they wield it as their magic. Element names can be that of the metal itself, related to machinery, or even digital and intangible computing concepts.
Metal, Steel, Iron, Gold.
Machine, Robot, Android, Cyborg, Engine, Clockwork.
Cyber, Digital, Data, Corrupt, Virus, Glitch.
Avian ๐ฆ
Distinct from the Wind-type above, Avian creatures are those with wings. The Avian-type is sometimes just a flag to tell the game that this monster flies, and it will instead have another elemental type. Flying monsters are usually good against close combat skills but weak to projectile weapons and windy attacks.
Avian, Bird, Flying, Winged Beast.
Dragon ๐
Many games put Dragons in their own distinct field. Their powers look like fire, but they don’t quite have the same properties. They are mystical, magical and resist many elements. Some RPG classes such as Dragon Knights allow the player to wield this power for themselves.
Dragon, Wyrm, Mythical, Mystical, Legend, Fantasy, Primal, Dinosaur, Reptile, Prehistoric, Fossil.
Space / Time ๐ช
Often introduced later in the game, Space & Time magic are all powerful. Attacks of this kind can distort the entire playing field making weird and wonderful effects. Players usually have to be high level to command this kind of magic.
Space, Time, Gravity, Cosmic, Matter, Anti-Matter, Comet, Alien, Galaxy, Galactic, Aether, Void, Star, Stellar, Astral, Celestial, Lunar, Moon.
Sound ๐ถ
Cropping up more and more often in games, Sound-type monsters and Sound-type moves can be quite diverse and fun to design. They can have weird but funny interactions outside of the elemental system, like doing more damage to characters with big ears.
Sound, Audio, Music, Sonic, Echo.
Drain ๐ฆ
Drain isn’t always its own distinct type, sometimes it’s covered by another type like “Darkness” or “Insect”. However, many RPGs will have a distinct elemental type for draining moves so that heroes and monsters can have weaknesses or resistances to being drained.
Drain, Vampire, Leech, Blood.
Others / Unusual Types ๐
Types that could be interesting to use in games, but aren’t very common or don’t fit the classic template of RPGs. These include food, trash, weird materials and personality traits.
Food, Meat, Sugar, Spicy, Sweet, Fresh, Butter, Sour, Dry, Salty, Candy.
Trash, Garbage, Rubbish, Stench, Filth, Plastic, Glass, Elastic, Rubber, Ink, Paint, Paper, Cotton, Fabric, Thread.
Nuclear, Radiation, Radioactive, Laser.
Smart, Cute, Beautiful, Cool, Strong, Tough, Funny.
Circus, Clown, Toy.
Copy, Mimic, Mirror.
Money, Coin, Luck.
Non-Elemental ๐พ
Finally, the element you give to monsters and attacks that have no element. They’re not special, they have no side effects, and they deal neutral damage to everyone.
Non-Elemental, Normal, Animal / Beast, None, Generic, Unknown, ???-type, Plain, Neutral, Typeless, Colorless, Mystery, Rainbow, Multitype, All Type.
